Studio Log

7.10.16 ( Species of space)

During this studio session my group discussed a lot about visually communicating the idea of going on a journey using pictures, our task was to collate all the images we had created earlier in the day into a long 'map' of ideas that would reflect a theme we had discussed as a group. Personally I really liked this because I take a lot of influence from the people around me as they apse ideas that I would't of seen myself. During the session rob said that he liked the way we had included real train tickets in our composition in a collaged effect as it helped to portray the story.

Tasks like this are to help us be creative and learn different techniques in production and presentation, I enjoyed being very create and free with what we had to do but my personality wants me to be more refined. From this task I would like to use macro and micro cartography in my sketchbook. http://jwb-design.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/species-of-spaces-91016.html

14.10.16 (sense of place)

Today was an open stdio day which allows us two work where ever we want to also we had our first group meeting with our tutor (John Kelly). He really liked the ideas I had about the observation of human effects within a city and looking how they act in the space they are in, He looks forward to seeing my research.

I spent a lot of the day getting on with the first part of my secondary research or the city as a space theme in my sketchbook, I had already done some research at home and had it printed so I presented that in my book and then continued my work on the mac. I hope to have completed this section by next friday.

In the next week I would like to of completed at least 1 of the 5 section in my secondary research this will keep me on track for my formative assessment on the 4th of November. I have already presented 3 pages so I just have 4 more to add this week and possibly start the research for the next theme.

20.10.16 ( Sense of place 2)

Today we had our second tutor meeting with John Kelly and he was very pleased with the progress I was making and he liked the layout and style of my sketchbook which now has around 11 pages. He said my hand drawn typography was very fitting and appropriate. He advised me to continue as I am and add more research to my book and keep up with the presentation.

I agree with my feedback as I have been making good progress on my sketchbook and I am happy that it's up to a good standard both visually and technically. We won't have a meeting now until the 11th of November because of creative exchange week and the assessment week. but I will continue to make progress.

I have a formative assessment on the 4th of November at 2:00pm by then I aim to have the minimum of 50% of the total sketchbook done. This will complete my secondary part and then I can move into primary after the assessment as I had previously planned.

4/11/16 ( Formative assessment)

This afternoon I had my formative assent meeting with John and it went really well, I had completed the rest of my secondary research since my last log post and its now done. He loved all the layout and presentational features in my work and I had included lots of hand drawn typography which he personally has an interest in. He liked my blog too and that I had kept on top of all the work and wants me to continue. He made a point of me standing out for my effort and ability which of course I was proud of because it's nice when an experienced designer can praise you.

Overall I am so happy with how the meeting went and I hope that in our next tutor session I will have made more progress.

11/11/16 ( Section 2)

Yesterday in robs lecture we got given the second part of the brief and got asked to answer a set of question to help us kick start the second part of the brief. He asked us to use bullet points to discuss with our tutor that will expand from there. In our session John really liked my idea of looking into the human footprint in a city but I needed to narrow down on what I wanted to produce. He also directed me in the path of what to include in my primary research to focus it on what I want my outcome to be

I agree with that John said to me and by next week I aim to have narrowed down everything that I listed into small paragraphs for John to review and then we can go from there. id also like to make some progress on the primary research.

18.11.16 ( Open studio)

I had a little bit of a discussion with John in the morning about the proposal I had made and if he wanted to make any changes or help me improve it. He helped me with the wording and punctuation of the page but really liked the ideas that I plan to do. We discussed the changed twice as I did them as soon as he told me to try and keep my project moving forward so Im now onto my 3rd draft and I think that I'm close to finalizing my proposal for the second part of the brief.

By next Friday I want to have my proposal finished and checked so that my research can be very focused from now on, Id like to gather things now that are very appropriate and useful to me as I know what I'm doing and this will help with my progression.

25.11.16 (Open studio)

Today I had a discussion with both rob and john about my proposal which is now done and checked, We discuss how to go about producing the ideas from my proposal into what I was going to make. It helped me a lot because they both directed me towards artists that will influence me about the work I'm currently doing which I found helpful. For the rest of the day I focused on the primary research that i'd done the weekend before whilst I was in Leeds, I took a lot of photos covering different themes and also collecting some things to make a collage, I wanted to get all of this into my sketchbook to not fall behind and to keep on top of what I was collecting.

By next Friday I would like to have planned out what I need and what needs to be done to produce my final outcome and finished the 8 pages I have started so far in my primary research section.

2.12.16 ( Open studio - 2 weeks to deadline)

In the last week I have ordered the materials needed to make a prototype of my final product as a presentation aid for the hand in. I have started an Indesign presentation to help me communicate the idea from my research and proposal in a visual form. I had a bit of 1 on 1 time with rob to help me set up the document in indesign with grids and paragraph styles. He gave me some advisories on how to make a professional and industry standard presentation. I also made some more progress in my sketchbook on the primary research side.

By next week I want have made some more progress on the presentation and in my sketchbook and I hope to receive the goods iv ordered so that I can begin to print and construct the prototype of my final design.

9.12.16 (open studio - 1 week to deadline)

Today I came in slightly earlier than usual to so I had a bit more time in the studio to use indesign I made more progress on my presentation and during the week id finished my actual prototype and photographed it so that could now be put into my presentation. I had a conversation with some of my peers to observe the progress they were making and see the things they had included and used to present their work. I had a short discussion with my tutor John as I wanted to show him the progress id made and he advised me on a few more things to include on my presentation.

By next week everything has to be complete and ready to present to our work to our chosen peer groups.

16.12.16 ( Open studio deadline day)

Notes from group presentations

Jamie: Go green campaign - Huddersfield. Branding a bit basic for this stage of design career but end product and development clearly rushed.
I like the inspiration for original research, Mind map is a good start but not presented well
Range of initial ideas

Jess: Powerpoint isnt industry standard, font size not appropriate. Really concise primary research, Direct proposal very realistic could be a real brief given by a client.
Not pushing boundries
Good use of physical resources.

John: Consider how it would look in an exhibition space and the psychology of the environment.
Grunge photography
Flawless proposal
design refinement

Joe: Range of seriously in depth research considering all areas in both primary and secondary. Perfect consideration of people in your area and the style, well though out editoral style of presentation. media well considered.

20.1.17 Manchester gallery trip
 Did not attend! Medical appointment.

27.1.17 ( Live brief beginning)

During this session I discussed with John about the plan I had made for the new live brief and he liked the depth that I was putting into the research and especially the specialized materials and finishes that I want to use. Im going to layout a presentation in InDesign but also print a physical sketch book because I want to include physical examples of printing techniques and card stocks. During the week I am going to go through my research and edit out all the information that isnt focused enough for me to use, I also have 6 pictures of all the past covers from the books to analyse too.

By next week I want to have all this complete and ready to put into the document to be printed so that I can start some initial ideas as this project has a really short deadline and I want to have enough time to develop my work.

3.2.17 ( Live brief work)

Today I worked mainly in Indesign on my presentation/ sketchbook I had done a lot of research during the week and I needed to lay it out in the document using grids. I spent a lot of time with Stephen who helped me to set up my document and grids and we also had a discussion about my doing some typography using the tablets to put into my work as this showed evidence of more design skill rather than using a type face straight off the computer. He really liked my idea of a physical sketchbook as it would be more appropriate for the style of work I am  doing for this brief.

By next week I want to have more research into my document and started to collect a rang of materials for my research into card stocks and finishes.

10.2.17 ( Live brief work)

My main focus today was to begin the second part of my research for my PDF presentation, I have finished the synopsis of all the books and the review of existing book covers. I spoke to rob about the progress I was making as he was the one who helped me to set up my document in indesign.

By next week I want to have finished my type face analysis,  inspiration page and summary of which brief I will pick.

17.2.17 ( Live Brief work)

I actually started on a cover design today as I have got to a stage in my research that im happy with however I still want to go back and add things to it for the hand in. I want to do some photography of ink in water as this is the route iv gone down for one of my covers. John who is my tutor also came to look at my presentation and he was amazed at the progress id made of the program and the standard I was working at.

I would like to have finished 2 cover ideas and done some photography during the week to keep on top of my dead line goals.

24.2.17 ( Innovation week)

3.3.17 (Live brief formative)

Overall I feel like my meeting today went very well I got some very good constructive criticism from Aiden who advised me on presentation tips for my pdf and also small thing about my cover which will help it look more industry standard. Mainly about type setting and spine orientation but it was small elements that will overall up the standard of my work. From the feedback I received I am going to add more depth to my research and make it more clear where my influences came from which will help the flow of my sketch book/ PDF and do the small improvements to my actual cover.

10.3.17 ( Self Negotiated Day 1)

Today I began to brainstorm some ideas in order to complete my self negotiated brief, this included a rationale with prompt questions and a brief deconstruction.
