Imagining lives lecture
During today's lecture rob introduced us to the idea of imagining situation from visual aids, he projected images and paintings of people onto the board and gave us time to analyse the image for visual keys to the persons life, wealth, purpose e.t.c
The image pictured below was one that stood out to me as it has strong clues involved if you look past the image that just shows a woman in a dress there are ques and references.
First of all the animal shes holding is an ermine. When I researched the meaning and reason that the ermine was used I found out that they symbolise purity, at the time that this painting was made by Da Vinci women were judged and though more highly of if they were pure or had no previous sexual relations. The style of paintings like this means that they present their ideas in less traditional forms and prefer to use symbols and references to describe attributes of the picture like the womans sexual relationships. Another meaning I found was that the ermine is a reference to love which may suggest that the women is currently in love OR looking for love the way she is holding it is quite gentle however it still maintains it's majestic posture this could mean that she is looking for a man with a similar style if you would.
The clothing in the picture is very regal and royal, the colours like green and gold and red were though of as 'posh' because people didn't have access to a lot of coloured material back then and its a reflection of the woman's wealth or reputation. If you also look in more detail the material she is dressed in appears to be velvet or suede similar to the colour of the fabric rare and expensive materials would of been hard to get hold of so only the most highly sort of people with vast amounts of money would of had access to luxuries like this.
Da Vinci has portrayed this woman to have a very clear and light complexion which is almost angelic , her skin tone is very fair and pale. She look clean and refined which leads me to think she as well looked after and possibly requested this as a way of promoting her beauty to the people who were to view this painting. She doesn't appear to be wearing any make up but her face is very naturally beautiful her hygiene is very good and she is presented well this another factor leading me to believe that she comes from a background of wealth and popularity.
